For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway #7

"If he had known how many men in history have had to use a hill to die on it would not have cheered him any for, in the moment he was passing through, men are not impressed by what has happened to other men in similar circumstances any more than a widow of one day is helped by the knowledge that other loved husbands have died."

I don't remember where I read it, but someone wrote that statistics don't matter to the individual.

A friend said, "Even if there is only a 1% chance of it happening and it does, the chances of it happening are 100%"

I know that doesn't really make sense even though the idea behind it makes sense. I had to try very hard not to get all hung up on the logic.

My apartment door is weird. It's annoying. It's dangerous. You can be locked inside. And you can lock people out even if they have the key.

Yep.

If I go inside and use the deadbolt to lock the door, nobody with the key can get inside. Great for locking out assholes.

If I'm inside, I can use the key to lock the door thus allowing other people with keys to come inside. Then, if I defenestrate the keys, drop them in the toilet or there is a fire and the keys are in the middle of the blaze, I'm trapped. Doomed to burn.

I hate that lock and I'm going to get a new one.

My point in bringing this up? My roommate gets mad if I don't lock the door properly, even if she is home. Why? She's afraid she will get thieved or worse.

While this is a valid enough concern, I lean towards the "relax it's not going to happen" viewpoint. Because, what are the odds?

1. There are at least seven buildings in our complex.
2. All are 20-some stories tall.
3. All have at 4 or so apartments per floor.

Which means, the odds of someone picking our building, floor and apartment are pretty slim. Unless of course it happens.

So what's the end result? I'm going to get a better lock and end the whole discussion.

I'm probably wrong anyway.

Oh, if I happen to die on a hill, make it sound awesome at the funeral.
