A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

"a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge."

People who don't read books terrify me.

You can spot people who don't read very often, especially if they are politically vocal. You can spot them because they are generally incapable of seeing things from someone else's point of view. Any topic outside of their bubble they can't comprehend.

Books force you to see through other peoples heads. They force you to understand what they are going through and they force you to love them even if they are terrible human beings.

When you do that over and over and over again you realize nothing is as simple as we think it is, that every person and their situation is infinitely more complex than first assumed.

Do people assume that everyone makes the same choices for the same reasons? "The only reason I would be on welfare is if I was a cheap ass moocher. Therefore, everyone else must be too?"

I know that can't be their rational thought process but it seems to fit some people I've met.
