“Eagles are extinct,” grumbled Morpurgo. “Perhaps they should have attacked the sky. It betrayed them.

I love the imagery in those lines. I also love the tragedy of the suggestion.

Helpless creatures battling forces they can't begin to understand, much less conquer.

Also, if the eagles had attacked the sky, they would have done so with such passion and purpose that it would have inspired awe to any observer.

It doesn't always matter if you can win the war or not.
